At Durham Charter School, we believe that every student deserves the opportunity to be challenged, inspired, and supported at the highest levels of learning. Our Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) program is designed to identify and nurture students with advanced academic potential through a rigorous, enriching curriculum that promotes curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning.

Aligned with our mission to build a world-class school in Durham that empowers students to thrive in college, career, and life, the AIG program provides targeted instruction and meaningful learning experiences that help gifted students reach their full potential.

Mission: To create a learning environment where gifted scholars are recognized, challenged, and inspired to reach their fullest potential—academically, socially, and emotionally.

Key Features of Our AIG Program:

• Early Identification
  Our identification process begins as early as first grade, using multiple measures to recognize high-potential learners early and equitably. This includes K-2 students who score in the 95th percentile or higher in both Math and ELA on the NWEA test, as well as students in grades 3-8 who achieve scores in the 90th percentile or above in ELA and the 95th percentile or above in math on their EOG assessments.
  
  
• Personalized Learning
  AIG students benefit from differentiated instruction, acceleration, enrichment activities, and project-based learning that challenge them at the appropriate depth and pace.
  
  
• Support Through All Grade Levels
  From elementary through middle school, students are provided with increasing levels of academic challenge and clubs. In high school, students can pursue an honors track and other advanced learning pathways.
  
  
• Focus on Growth & Excellence
  Our AIG program is dedicated to nurturing both advanced academic skills and vital habits of mind—such as creativity, persistence, collaboration, and problem-solving—that empower students for lifelong achievement. Elementary AIG scholars engage in enriching clubs and activities designed to spark curiosity and develop critical thinking from an early age. These experiences lay a strong foundation for future academic success and personal growth. Middle school AIG scholars have the unique opportunity to accelerate their learning by advancing to English 1 and/or Math 1 courses. In high school, scholars can challenge themselves further through honors and online classes offered via NCVPS, as well as dual enrollment at Durham Technical College, enabling them to earn both a high school diploma and an associate’s degree.
